Paving & Patio FAQs in Macclesfield
Yes. We construct our paving projects in line with current good practice, relevant British Standards and applicable planning or Building Regulation requirements. This includes correct ground preparation, suitable sub-bases, drainage, falls, damp-proof course clearances and appropriate materials for the intended use.
Proper preparation is one of the most important parts of any patio. We excavate to a suitable depth, remove unsuitable material and install an appropriate, well-compacted sub-base before the paving is laid. The exact build-up depends on the ground conditions, paving material and whether the area will carry pedestrian or vehicle traffic. Current BS 7533 guidance covers structural design and installation of modular paved surfaces.
We assess levels and drainage before installation and build appropriate falls into the finished surface so rainwater is directed safely away from the property. Depending on the garden, this may involve draining towards planted areas, permeable ground or a suitable drainage system rather than allowing water to collect against the house or create standing water.
As a general rule, finished external ground levels should remain at least 150mm below the damp-proof course of an external wall unless a specifically designed detail allows otherwise. Maintaining this clearance helps reduce the risk of bridging the DPC and causing damp problems inside the property.
SuDS stands for Sustainable Drainage Systems. They are designed to manage rainwater more naturally and reduce the amount of surface water rapidly entering drainage systems. Depending on the project, this can include permeable paving, directing water into lawns or borders, or incorporating other drainage solutions. England’s current national SuDS standards promote managing runoff in ways that reduce flood risk and improve resilience.
Often not, provided the surface is permeable or rainwater drains naturally into a lawn or border. However, if more than 5m² of front garden is covered with traditional impermeable paving and the water is not directed to a permeable area, planning permission may be required. We take these requirements into account when discussing front garden and driveway projects.
We specialise in porcelain and Indian sandstone patios. Both materials are durable, stylish, and available in a wide range of colours and finishes to suit your outdoor space.
Yes. Porcelain, sandstone, limestone, concrete, granite, slate and paving setts all have different characteristics and may require different bedding, priming, jointing and installation techniques. We select the construction method according to the material, manufacturer guidance, site conditions and intended use rather than applying the same specification to every patio.
Existing thresholds, damp-proof courses, drainage and access all need to be considered before the finished paving level is set. Building guidance also makes clear that alterations should not make access to a dwelling less satisfactory, so levels and steps need to be planned carefully rather than simply raising the patio to suit the surrounding garden
The paving you see is only the finished surface. The longevity of a patio also depends on excavation, sub-base preparation, drainage, falls, bedding, jointing and maintaining suitable levels around the property. At Brite Landscaping, we approach the entire construction as a system rather than concentrating solely on how the paving looks when it is first installed.
