Why Choose Brite Landscaping for Your Pergola?

Designed Around Your Outdoor Space

We consider the size of your garden, patio, orientation, existing landscaping and how you intend to use the area before recommending the right pergola style and position.

Built on Proper Foundations

A pergola is a permanent outdoor structure, so correct foundations, post positioning and secure fixing are essential. We design the installation around the size, material and ground conditions of each project.

Integrated Into the Wider Garden

Pergolas work best when they form part of the overall landscape. We can integrate your structure with paving, decking, raised planters, screening and lighting to create one cohesive outdoor living space.

Pergola FAQs in Macclesfield

  • In many cases, no. Pergolas can fall within permitted development provided the relevant conditions are met. Restrictions include positioning, overall height, proximity to boundaries and total garden coverage. Listed buildings and some designated areas may require additional permission

  • Simple timber pergolas can start around £1,200–£2,500 installed, while bespoke timber, hardwood and aluminium systems cost progressively more. Premium motorised louvred pergolas can exceed £10,000.

  • Timber offers natural character and generally a lower initial cost. Aluminium requires less maintenance, provides a more contemporary appearance and is particularly suited to louvred roof systems.

  • Lifespan depends on timber species, treatment, construction and exposure to weather. Properly treated softwood can provide many years of service, while hardwood and oak generally offer greater natural durability.

  • Yes. Wall-mounted pergolas are popular for creating a covered or defined seating area directly outside the property. The wall construction and fixing points need to be assessed before installation.

  • Often, yes. Existing paving can sometimes remain in place, although foundations for the pergola posts may still require sections to be lifted or drilled depending on the structure.

  • Yes. Lighting can be incorporated into both timber and aluminium structures. Premium aluminium systems often include integrated LED lighting, while bespoke wiring can be designed into timber pergolas.

  • Traditional open timber pergolas mainly provide structure and partial shade rather than full rain protection. Fixed-roof, retractable and louvred aluminium systems can provide substantially greater weather protection.

  • Yes. Slatted timber, composite or aluminium screening can be incorporated into one or more sides to add privacy, wind protection and additional visual interest.

  • Permitted-development limits depend on position and roof design. Outbuildings are generally limited to 2.5m overall height when positioned within 2m of a boundary, while structures further away may have higher limits subject to other conditions

Pergolas & Planning Requirements

Most domestic pergolas can be installed under permitted development, but the rules vary depending on height, position, proximity to boundaries and the property itself.

Planning Portal states that outbuildings positioned within 2 metres of a boundary generally have a maximum permitted height of 2.5 metres. Structures must also meet rules relating to the principal elevation and the total amount of land covered by buildings and additions. Listed buildings and properties with restricted permitted-development rights require additional consideration.
